PRESS RELEASE: James Lumsden - Reflexion

April 21, 2018

Holly Johnson Gallery is pleased to present James Lumsden’s exhibition Reflexion, representing a body of work developed over the last three years. An opening reception will be held Saturday, May 19th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, following the group show Manmade in 2016. Reflexion will continue through August 11.

Lumsden’s paintings continue to investigate how raw materials innate to the medium can be turned into something poetic – an object filled with light, feeling, atmosphere, and emotion. Led by his chosen medium and a deep understanding of the subtleties and contradictions of the painted surface, Lumsden expands the possibilities of the medium through adept experimentation.

His process involves the application of up to forty thin crystalline films of pigment and gloss medium. The layers are dragged, pulled or manipulated with various implements – the process being repeated layer upon layer until the painting begins to emerge. By both chance and deliberation, the final painting reveals varying chromatic strata, which can be seen through the translucence and depth of the work.

Lumsden’s exuberant curiosity and disciplined craft invigorate each new work, transforming raw materials into layered histories of thought and feeling. The immaculate surfaces absorb and reflect light, seducing the eye, heart, and mind with vivid, beguiling statements of emotive color and gestural mark.

The artist was born in Inverness, Scotland (1964). He has been the recipient of several awards including a B.A.I.R Residency Award at The Banff Arts Centre, Alberta, Canada, a Scottish Arts Council Creative Development Award and a Royal Scottish Academy Residencies for Scotland Award. Recent solo exhibitions include Sarah Myerscough Gallery, London; Paul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary, Canada; MAC, Birmingham; An Tuireann, Isle of Skye; Triskel Arts Centre, Cork, Ireland; and Aalborg Trienalle, Denmark. He currently lives and works in Edinburgh and The Isle of Lewis.
